Sculpting shapewear is the one category where guessing your size costs you twice: too small and you can't breathe, too big and nothing sculpts. This guide is the exact system we use to fit Vellamy pieces — two measurements, one rule, and an honest note about what compression should feel like.
The two measurements that matter
You need a soft tape measure and ninety seconds. Measure over bare skin or thin underwear, not over clothes.
- Natural waist — the narrowest point of your torso, usually an inch or two above your navel. Breathe out normally before you read the number; don't cinch the tape.
- Fullest hip — stand with feet together and measure around the widest point of your hips and seat.
That's it. Bust measurements only matter for our underwire pieces — for those, your usual bra band size is the better guide.
The size-up rule
If you're between sizes, size up. Every time. Sculpting fabric runs snug by design — the compression is built into the knit, not into how tightly you squeeze into it. The larger size still sculpts; it just does it without digging at the edges or fighting you at hour six. A piece you can't breathe in is the wrong size, not a stronger result.

Match the hold to the day, not just the size
Getting the size right is half the fit; the other half is choosing the right level of hold.
- Everyday smooth — seamless, light, invisible. For denim, knits and daily wear: The Seamless Bodysuit.
- Sculpt & shape — firm waist definition and real tummy control: The Sculpt Underwire Bodysuit or Lift Shaping Shorts.
- Maximum sculpt — structured, dramatic, for the dress moments: The Overbust Cincher or The Hourglass Shaper.
How it should feel when it's right
Snug and evenly supportive — like a firm hug, not a pinch. You should be able to breathe fully, sit comfortably, and forget you're wearing it by mid-morning. Red marks at the edges, rolling waistbands, or shallow breathing all mean one thing: go up a size.
Still unsure?
Answer three questions on our fit finder and it will point you to your piece and size — or message us your measurements and we'll fit you personally. One honest note: Vellamy sculpts the line of what you wear while it's on. It isn't a weight-loss product, and we'll never pretend otherwise.
